★ARC REVIEW★ RUSH BY SAMANTHA TOWLE

Published by Headline Eternal

RUSH by Samantha Towle

Series: Gods, #2

Release Date: 7th August 2018

From Samantha Towle, New York Times bestselling author of Breaking Hollywood and Ruin, comes a new powerful, passionate and dramatic contemporary romance.

“With the first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select…”

It’s been three years since quarterback Ares Kincaid’s NFL dream came true, and he’s living the high life. The days of cleaning up after his drunk of a father are long gone, and he has no intention of going back.

A car crash and DUI charge meant a lengthy stint in rehab for Arianna Petrelli, and her dream of being a professional artist slips further away when she’s sacked from her position at a gallery. Her need for a job stronger even than her dislike of football, Ari goes to work for her father, the head coach of the New York Giants.

Ares hates alcoholics, which is fine with Ari because she thinks he’s a brainless jock. Yet when Ares rescues Ari from a situation with her ex-boyfriend, an unlikely friendship begins – one that quickly becomes more.

But messing around with the coach’s daughter can only lead to one thing…trouble.

★4.5  STARS★

Arianna Petrelli’s new job comes with the chance of a fresh start. Never mind the fact she’s the disgraced daughter of NFL head coach of the New York Giants, her father has pulled some strings and secured a role for her as the teams assistant, whatever that means.

She’s insightful enough to realise the position has been created by way of means for her father to keep a close eye on her. But after hitting rock bottom with a DUI arrest, a stint in rehab and the loss of her dream job Ari is seizing the opportunity to get her life back on track.

Her first day on the job veers dramatically off course when she finds herself one on one with star quarterback Ares Kincaid. They have an easy back and forth which comes to a screeching halt when he discovers who she is, or more specifically, what she has done. She’s used to the looks of disgust she garners from her arrest, but admittedly his rejection stings more than most.

What Ari doesn’t know is that Ares hostility is borne from his own experiences with his alcoholic father. He thinks her callous and selfish and isn’t afraid to tell her so. It isn’t until Ares is forced to step in between an incident with her and her ex-boyfriend does he begin to see the real Ari. If he’s honest with himself even with his preconceived notions about her, he’s frustrated by how much he can’t stop thinking about her.

I loved that Ari had no hesitations in accepting accountability. She strove to maintain her sobriety and was focused on the betterment of herself, and because of this I was struck by how quickly I become emotionally attached to her.

The fiery beginning of their nemeses evolved into an intense and heartfelt relationship that I quickly became obsessed with. On par with the story it had depth and sentiment making it a highly enjoyable read.

Addictive, emotional and passionate, Rush is Samantha Towle at her best.

A YA novel from USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen.

Never ask a question unless you’re sure you want the truth.

I’ve been listening to my father sing for my whole life. I carry him in my pocket on my mp3 player. It’s just that we’ve never met face to face.

My mother would never tell me how I came to be, or why my rock star father and I have never met. I thought it was her only secret. I was wrong.

When she dies, he finally appears. Suddenly I have a first class ticket into my father’s exclusive world. A world I don’t want any part of – not at this cost.

Only three things keep me going: my a cappella singing group, a swoony blue-eyed boy named Jake, and the burning questions in my soul.
There’s a secret shame that comes from being an unwanted child. It drags me down, and puts distance between me and the boy I love.

My father is the only one alive who knows my history. I need the truth, even if it scares me.

★5  STARS★

The Accidentals is the emotionally poignant story of seventeen year old Rachel Kress, and the upheaval of her life after her mother’s tragic passing.

Although her father has been absent throughout her life, she’s never been in any doubt of who he is. The “he” in question is grammy nominated and multi award winning rock star, Freddy Ricks. His musical presence has been the soundtrack to her childhood, but the reality of his enigma and physical presence strike notes of discord between what she thinks she knows, and the answers she still seeks.

The testament to my instant investment in this story is the result of Sarina’s flawless writing. I was immediately endeared to Rachel and the grace and bravery she exhibited at such an uncertain period in her life. The relationship between father and daughter was seamless yet fraught as they danced around the painful decisions of the past. I felt her hesitation and curiosity and met them with my own hopeful need for her to have the happy ending she so deserved.

An additional dynamic to the story was the adorable romance between Rachel and her fellow classmate Jake. He’s sweet relief from the heaviness of home and I was grateful it gave her the reprieve to be a kid again.

With perfect pacing and development, The Accidentals is an emotionally sophisticated Young Adult debut from an author i’ve long been in adoration of.

ONE SMALL THING by Erin Watt

Release Date: 26th June 2018

Genre: Young Adult

Beth’s life hasn’t been the same since her sister died. Her parents try to lock her down, believing they can keep her safe by monitoring her every move. Only Beth doesn’t know how big her secret really is…

Fresh out of juvie and determined to start his life over, Chase has demons to face and much to atone for, including his part in the night Beth’s sister died. Beth, who has more reason than anyone to despise him, is willing to give him a second chance. Now Beth has a choice to make—follow the rules, or risk tearing everything apart…again.

★3- 3.5 STARS★

As the result of a tragic accident which killed her elder sister Beth’s parents are overprotective to the point of suffocation. They are intense and afraid, and the way in which it manifests itself only serves to further isolate Beth from them. At times she feels guilty, whether it be the guilt of being alive, or the guilt of being alive but not truly living. She lives her life on rote of her parent’s demands but finds herself lasing out in destructive ways when their demands interfere with her future.

An act of teen rebellion brings with it the most shocking of consequences. Beth finds herself connected to the person who is the source of her families despair. There is plenty of inner angst and turmoil and at times I would have loved to have had a balanced voice within it all. Beth is in a position which should evoke nothing but empathy but admittedly I found myself becoming frustrated with her and those surrounding her. The environment becomes a breeding ground of judgement and I felt disappointed in the behaviours at people who were supposed to set examples, for instance some of the adults and teachers.

By way of characters I found Chase the most likeable. He’s tormented by his mistake but even so his unwavering concern of Beth, and steadfastness made him a worthy hero. He had paid for his transgressions and I felt him truly remorseful, but the repercussions of his actions brought out the ugliness of how carelessly we can sometimes treat each other. Emotionally I felt this message was a huge takeaway from the story, and it serves an appreciative reminder. Although on a whole not all aspects worked; this one small thing that had a lasting impact on me.

THE FRAGILE ORDINARY by Samantha Young

Genre: Young Adult

Release Date: 26th June 2018

I am Comet Caldwell.

And I sort of, kind of, absolutely hate my name.

People expect extraordinary things from a girl named Comet. That she’ll be effortlessly cool and light up a room the way a comet blazes across the sky.

But from the shyness that makes her book-character friends more appealing than real people to the parents whose indifference hurts more than an open wound, Comet has never wanted to be the center of attention. She can’t wait to graduate from her high school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the only place she ever feels truly herself is on her anonymous poetry blog. But surely that will change once she leaves to attend university somewhere far, far away.

When new student Tobias King blazes in from America and shakes up the school, Comet thinks she’s got the bad boy figured out. Until they’re thrown together for a class assignment and begin to form an unlikely connection. Everything shifts in Comet’s ordinary world. Tobias has a dark past and runs with a tough crowd—and none of them are happy about his interest in Comet. Targeted by bullies and thrown into the spotlight, Comet and Tobias can go their separate ways…or take a risk on something extraordinary.

THE KISS QUOTIENT by Helen Hoang

Genre: Contemporary Romance

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there’s not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases–a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice–with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan–from foreplay to more-than-missionary position…

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic…

Not all fantasies are safe, sane, and consensual. Welcome to the world of The Gallery…

Milo Fierro lives for two things, dominance and music. At The Gallery, where depravity rules, he’s known for his passionate desires, but on the outside, he’s learned to hide beneath a veneer of dark-eyed professionalism. It’s too dangerous to be himself. Most women don’t understand.

Alice definitely doesn’t understand. Her father was his violin teacher for years, and now that she and Milo are adults, she thinks they can be friends. The girl he knew as “Lala” draws him in with her grace and kindness, unaware of his ugly, hidden side. He can’t touch her, or even stand near her. SPEAKEASY by Sarina Bowen

Series: True North, #5

Release Date: 28th May 2018

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

May

Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.

Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

Alec

I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.

It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.

Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…

★3.5 STARS★

The True North series is a series that truly keeps on giving. Although Speakeasy is fifth in line, there appears to be no let up when it comes to my enjoyment of the stories Sarina has to tell about her Vermont natives.

If you’re already a fan of the series, you’ll know that May Shipley is little sister to our favourite grumpy farmer, Griff. We know enough about May to establish some of her background. She’s a recovering alcoholic, and her relationship with her girlfriend appears to be more of a crutch than a healthy, balanced one. Still, even with all we do know there’s enough intrigue about May and how she comes to form an attachment to Alec that makes this story as exciting as if I were going in blind.

Alec Rossi is the owner of Gin Mill bar. He’s never short of female attention and although he admittedly takes full advantage, he struggles with the effect it has on his ability to be taken seriously. He has grand plans for the Gin Mill, but his most immediate plans involve holding May Shipley back from causing a brawl in his bar.

There are some degrees of separation with May and Alec but it’s in the midst of May’s messy breakup that they reconnect. For all intents and purposes a recovering alcoholic and publican might not make the most sense when it comes to forming a friendship but I was fully on-board for the genuineness of it all. There’s a disarming likeability about Alec, and along with May I found myself charmed by him. So much so in fact it’s not long before they are charming the pants off one another.

Humour and sexual attraction aside, the admiration, support and lack of judgement they have for one another made them a praiseworthy couple in my eyes. I respected May’s honesty and Alec’s steely determination. That said I feel as though I had a deeper emotional/poignant connection to the previous males in the series than I did with Alec. I know it’s wrong to compare but even held up side by side with May, it was she who stole the show for me.

At the heart of it Speakeasy spoke to the part of me that believes in second chances and finding love in the unlikeliest of places.
