What do you do when the one you least expect to matter…

Ends up mattering the most?

Derek Pearson likes to think he’s an easygoing guy. Uncomplicated, upfront, and unapologetic with what he wants. His what you see is what you get attitude is on prominent display for anyone who cares to look, and his foul mouth is right there to back it up should you miss the point.

However, what you see isn’t always what you get, and only a select few have ever glimpsed the real man under the brash exterior.

Among them? Professor Jordan Devaney. Complicated, high-maintenance, and vibrant, he’s Derek’s opposite in every way. From the moment they saw each other, a love-hate relationship began.

But what happens when one person wants more?

Devils-Kiss-Teaser1

Having read Finley, the first book in the Sunset Cove series, my introduction to Derek and Jordan had been nothing short of intriguing. My first impressions after their scene stealing moment was that, I had to know what it was that bound these two decidedly opposite men. On the surface their only commonality appeared to be that their respective best friends were romantically involved, but it soon become apparent their relationship goes further than mere acquaintances.

With a story spanning over 10 years, Ella takes us back to the very beginning. My affection for Derek was instantaneous, as a person he is jaded and guarded. What should be a exciting and eye opening experience of starting college is marred by his home life situation. Although physically strong he is a wounded character, and it’s something that is recognised by his professor, Jordan Devaney.

The unlikeliness of their pairing made for a sometimes tempestuous relationship. Jordan is a outgoing and a vivacious character, but surprising of the two, he is the one I identified with the least. It may have been his reluctance in moving forward with their relationship – for reasons that did not seem wholly reasonable that were the culprit for my feelings. Thats said, his devotion to Derek was unquestionable. When Derek called, he came. Everytime.

Devil’s Kiss is a romance that builds, and much like the anticipation it creates, it’s savoured. I’m not sure if it’s something in the water down in Sunset Cove but I’ve become to addicted to this series and I hope there is more to come in the not to distant future.

RR_synopsis

One life-changing summer.

One boy.

The boy.

The boy who offered me safe touches and heart-stopping smiles – smiles he shared with his son.

We filled our days with porch-step kisses,

filled our ears with laughter,

filled our hearts with love.

Deep, soul-aching, desperate love.

But love is misleading.

It’s an invisible, fleeting moment.

Somewhere between false adoration and pure hatred comes an emotion, a vulnerable need, a single desire.

It lives within the ones who miss it, who crave it,

who know better than to expect it.

Love is relentless.

Even when that love turns to hate, turns to loathing,

turns to pain.

Love should heal you.

But it can also break you.

Believe me, I know…

Because I’m Becca Owens – a broken girl…

…And he’s Josh Warden – the boy who broke me.

Synopsis

Damon Atwood was Hollywood’s golden boy. Having won an Oscar at the tender age of thirteen, he had the life many could only dream about. But his success came at a price, and after a short but fruitful film career, he chose to live a life of obscurity on a remote Scottish island. Almost a decade later he’s finally ready to make his return, starting with a lead role in a musical on London’s West End.

As a choreographer’s assistant, Rose Taylor has always faded into the background. She watches shows come to life from the side lines, but has never craved the attention of stardom. When rumours begin circulating of Damon’s involvement in her latest gig, she doesn’t predict how she will be thrust into the limelight, nor how the mysterious and strangely introverted man will need her to teach him how to be a star again.

Rose knows that show crushes don’t last. Actors fall for each other during the intensity of a production, often losing themselves in their roles. These kinds of affairs burn bright and then they fade. The question is, should Rose let herself shine with Damon, or guard her heart from being broken after the final curtain call?

REVIEW

Since having the good sense to start reading L.H. Cosway, i’ve always enjoyed the creativity behind her novels. Be it magic, the circus, or the stage, there is always more to fall in love with than just the romance itself.

SHOWMANCE tells the story of Rose Taylor, a choreographer’s assistant who loves the stage but is more than content to dwell in the shadows of it’s spotlight. Having recently suffered heartbreak at the hands of a callous actor, losing herself in the theatres latest production is just what she needs.

Along with the buzz of excitement are the rumours regarding the cast’s leading male, Damon Atwood. The one time child star’s resurgence from his hermit lifestyle is a hot topic among the cast and Rose can’t help herself but be intrigued by him.

Damon is the kind of hero I always enjoy reading about. He’s moody, brusque with an air of mystery surrounding him. Beneath his outward exterior is a passionate man whose past has led him to be ruled by his insecurities.

I very much enjoyed the showmanship of the novel, and the friends to lovers relationship that blossomed. As I was so keen to see them get together, I did find frustration in the pacing at times, as well as some of the drama presented.

There is the bonus of the character of Julian who is Rose’s best friend and I can’t wait for more to come from him in the future.

Excerpt

“Well now, who’s this?” Julian asked as he slid up off the couch, where he’d been lazily scrolling through his tablet.

I chanced a quick, reassuring peek at Damon before answering my friend. “This is Damon. He’s in the cast.”

Julian groaned as he approached, his chestnut hair sitting messily atop his head. “Oh please, Rose, not another actor.”

I glared at him, trying to channel as much ‘shut the hell up’ into my eyes as possible. My flatmate didn’t really have a censor. A moment of quiet ensued while Julian circled Damon, taking his measure. “You don’t look like an actor.”

The edges of Damon’s mouth twitched for the briefest second. “Thanks.”

“He’s got a sense of humour, too. He’ll go far,” Julian grinned in my direction then sauntered into the kitchen. “I’m starving. Are you cooking dinner?”

“Aren’t I always,” I sighed and then asked Damon if I could take his coat. He shrugged out of it, his eyes not leaving me all the while, and then I went to hang it on the rack by the door. On my return he bent to ask curiously, “Another actor?”

I took a moment to absorb the sensation of his breath hitting my skin. It was…not unpleasant. Julian, who I swear had the hearing of a bat, didn’t miss a beat as he let out an amused chuckle. “Rose has a weakness for those in your profession.”

Damon looked at me in question. I strode over to the breakfast bar, again glaring at my friend. “Yes, well, I’ve sworn off all thespians after the last disaster, so Damon here is safe.”

“What disaster?”

For someone who claimed not to be a big talker, he sure had a lot of questions.

“Ever heard of Blake Winters?” Julian chirped, plucking an apple from the fruit bowl and taking a big bite.

Damon shook his head. Julian scrunched his brows.

“Have you been living under a rock?”

“No, I’ve been living on an island,” said Damon.

Julian cocked his head to the side, as though trying to figure out if he was being sarcastic. “Well, he’s an actor, like you, and he sleeps around. Rose had the great misfortune to have her head turned by the young Mr Winters. He seduced her and then left her in the lurch, the swine,” Julian pouted his lips, effecting a disapproving expression.

“Sounds like an arse,” Damon put in and both Julian and I began laughing.

“I like this one,” said Julian.

I grinned as I thought, yeah, me too, and found myself suddenly blushing.

RR_synopsis

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a riveting new story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

For some people, silence is a weapon.

For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield.

Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.

Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory must make a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.

Review: My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emotional. Hopeful. Inspiring.

Growing up in foster care, neglect and abuse are no strangers so Mallory Dodge and Rider Stark. As Six year olds, they were each other’s solaces in a world where they were failed by the adults around them. Years later freedom comes as a result of a particularly harrowing night, but with it, a separation and end to the home they found in one another.

It’s not until four years later, as seniors in high school that they re-enter each other lives. There are some powerful moments shared and what takes place is the a story of love, loss and discovery. I was moved by JLA’s descriptions, her emotive style of writing and the overwhelming admiration I have for Mallory and Rider.

I always feel as though I’m in safe hands when it comes too JLA and YA. The reticence I usually feel about the sub genre dissipated within the first few pages of The Problem with Forever. There is such depth in both the storyline and characters, the only problem I had was putting it down.

RR_Excerpt

Prologue

Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.

              Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.

Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.

Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.

She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.

All she’d wanted was a cookie.

Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.

The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.

              Oh no, no, no…

He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—

She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.

              “I’m sorry,” she gasped.

“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”

Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.

              She nodded.

“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.

“You stay in here. No matter what.”

Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.

He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.

A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”

“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”

All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.

He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.

              Don’t make a sound.

              Mr. Henry started to yell.

              Don’t make a sound.

              Footsteps punched down the hall.

              Don’t make a sound.

Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.

              Don’t make a sound.

RR_synopsis

Eleven years ago, I saved her. I loved her. I still do. But they took me away from her and locked me up. For two years, all I could think about was her. She consumed me. Took up every room in my head and gave me something to focus on, knowing I would see her soon.

Nine years ago, I watched her as she walked down the aisle and into the arms of a man that wasn’t me. My brother. I promised him that I’d leave town.

I did and never looked back.

Now, I’m staring at seven letters, each envelope stamped with one word in bold, red ink: URGENT.

I have no choice but to go back home. Seeing her will be the hardest thing I’ll ever have to do. But in order to reconcile with my past, I have to face my present. Even if the thought of seeing her, knowing that she is out of my reach, kills me.

I have no idea what awaits me, but I can only hope that the demons of my past will finally be buried and put to rest.

RR_Excerpt

The air around me shifts, like atoms rearranging themselves to accommodate a potent, powerful entity. My eyes snap open. I swing my head around to my right and there, lying next to me calmly as though it’s something completely normal, is Cole Holloway.

I bolt upright and turn to face him. “How did you get up here?” He doesn’t respond. Then I remember that he can’t hear me. I touch his arm, making sure he can see my lips. Thank goodness the moon is full tonight. He tilts his head to the side to look at me. “How did you get up here?”

He points to the side of the building. I follow his finger and see the white ladder poking at the roof. Ah, I’d completely forgotten about it.

He turns his head and faces the sky. Holding my breath, I study his profile; his sharp nose and angular jaw. A faint scent of musk cologne drifts toward me, making the hair on the nape of my neck stand on end.

Dragging my gaze from his face, I look up at the infinite dark sky and I smile. Every part of me is centered on him. His movements. Every rise and fall of his chest doubles my heart beat until the only sound that fills my senses is my pulse pounding in my ears.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

Seconds, minutes, probably hours go by. Centuries could pass. Seasons could come and go, but I wouldn’t notice, because this is the most spellbinding moment I’ve ever experienced in my seventeen years on this earth.

Something fleetingly touches the back of my hand, startling me.

There it is again. A soft touch along the side of my pinkie. My skin is on fire now. My heart is in my throat and my lungs are nowhere near working right. The touch is firm now. Deliberate. He hooks his pinkie around mine and tugs gently. Then he exhales hard, and I swear the roof moves beneath our bodies. Suddenly, the finger uncoils from mine, leaving me cold. I blink several times before twisting, turning my head to the side to look at him.

Did I imagine that touch?

I glance down and see that his hand is curled into a fist at his side. He sits up, then turns slightly to the side to face me. His face is framed in shadows so I can’t see it clearly. A shiver skitters down my back as he leans forward without warning until I feel his quick breath fan my lips, his eyes on my mouth the entire time. He takes a tendril of the hair fanned around my head and rubs it between his fingers, his eyes not leaving mine. I’m captivated by his eyes, his overwhelming presence. I should scold him for being too forward and getting into my space, but I can’t. I’m mesmerized by the inhales and exhales passing through his parted lips.

He lets go of my hair and climbs to his feet with the agility and swiftness of a panther. Between one breath and the next, he’s gone, disappearing into the night as quietly as he came. Taking with him a tiny piece of my heart. As odd as it sounds, I feel a certain connection to this quiet boy.

I attempt to prop my upper body on my elbows so I can watch him as he walks back to his house, but they feel too jelly-like. I settle back on the roof, grinning and listening to the muffled crunch of his shoes on the grass until it fades.

RR_synopsis

Everyone loves a good love story. The stories that make you feel warm all over. The kind that leaves you the slightest bit envious because the story belongs to someone else and not you. The stories that make your heart race and on the edge of pain and pleasure. Pain because your heart hurts and pleasure because your heart hurts. An unlikely combination, yet, that’s the stuff good love stories are made of.

Ours could have been like that. We could have made a beautiful love story.
But when he was ready for that epic love story, I was afraid to fall in love, too hurt by my past to trust anyone. Then, when I was ready for the epic love story, he was gone.
And I was alone.
And the only thing I got was the pain.
It was time I told him the things that were in my heart but too afraid to say out loud.

I wrote the letter I needed to write and prayed it wasn’t too late.

Dear Charlie,

You were right. I was wrong. I’ve never been more wrong in my life.
There – I said it.
I’ll say it a million times if you just come back to me.
Come back to me. Please!

I was so wrong. I do love you.

REVIEW – 5 STARS

My goodness, that was beautiful. I have to admit I feel rather silly as to why it’s taken me so long to pick up a book by Pamela Sparkman. I’ve seen fantastic reviews for her Stolen Breaths series, but it was the synopsis to Back to Yesterday which instantly ignited my interest.

Set in 1943 during World War II, it was unique to anything I’ve read previously. After reading I can say it was not only a unique experience, but an incredibly special one too.

Back to Yesterday is the true essence of a love story. It’s beautifully written and captures the wonderful and fragile moments that come with falling in love. I basked in the imagery Pamela created and fell in love with not only the story, but the characters too.

Prologue

Charlie

Her best friend found me sitting alone in the café.  I guess she knew where to find me. It wasn’t hard.  I was always sitting alone in the café, because it was where Sophie worked and I liked being near her.  Though, she wasn’t here now and I likely wouldn’t see her again anytime soon.

“She’s heartbroken you know.”

Never once stealing a glance her way, I murmured, “I know.”

“You should go to her.  I’ve never seen her like this.”

I closed my eyes, recalling the last words Sophie had said to me.  It was what I’d been doing for the last two hours. In fact, her last words felt like they were woven around my neck like a noose, choking the life out of me.

“Charles, look at me.”

I didn’t. Instead, I chose to tell her what I knew to be true. “She doesn’t want to see me.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“Believe it.”  I turned to face her so she could see my pain, my broken heart, and then redirected my eyes back out the window.  “Besides, it’s probably better this way.”

Her friend slid in the booth across from me. “Better for whom? Her or you?”

“For both of us I suppose.”

With a sigh, she made the request again. “Please look at me, Charles.”

Hesitantly, I granted her request and turned to her.  Her eyes wore empathy, and her smile held regret. “I know you told her you were leaving tomorrow and I know she hasn’t admitted it to you yet, but she loves you.  You have to know that.”

Swallowing the ache I felt, I nodded.  “I know.”

“Well if you know then why are you sitting here?  Why aren’t you with her trying to–”

“I know what I’m doing,” I said, standing abruptly.  I reached into my pocket, pulled out some money and slapped it down on the table.  “I’m giving her what she wants.”

Coming to a stand beside me and getting in my face, she said, “Yeah?  And what is that exactly?”

Ignoring her question, I headed for the door.  She followed, nipping at my heels all the way.  “I can’t believe you! You’re just gonna leave…without another word…just like that?”

I was coming unraveled at the seams. Once outside, I spun around and gripped her shoulders, startling her when I did something I never do…I raised my voice.  “Yes!  That’s exactly what I’m gonna do!”

Her eyes darted back and forth between mine while she tried to make sense of it all.  “But…why?”

I loosened my grip and stated in a softer tone, hoping I could make her understand. “Because… it’s the only way she’ll ever admit that she made a mistake.  I have to let her think she lost me, Elizabeth, and you have to let her think that too.”

“I don’t understand.  You should fight for her.”

I took a step back and looked her right in the eyes.  “I am fighting for her. I’ve been fighting for her.”  I bowed my head, feeling the gaping hole inside my chest where my heart used to be, and in a whisper said, “It’s her turn to fight for me.”

I grew up in Alabama and have always been an avid reader.  I had a stack of those Little Golden Books and I can remember reading Three Little Kittens over and over and over again.  It was my favorite.

Fast forward and the older I got the more in love books I became.  So, I’m admitting that I am a huge nerd.  The only reading I don’t like are those math word problems.  And I’m okay with that because no one has ever asked me in real life… “If I give you two bananas and take away six apples, how long will it take the southbound train to collide with the northbound train if Johnny left his house at midnight?”  It just doesn’t happen.

So, yeah, books are my thing.

Oh, and writing.  I love to write.  So, I did.  Write, I mean.  And when I was finished I had a story in front of me about a girl named Lily, and a guy named Cooper.  And when I reached the end, I felt – lost.  Like, I was saying good-bye to old friends.  It snuck up on me and I realized I wasn’t ready to let go.  It was then I decided that I needed to keep writing – keep telling stories – and hopefully some other people may enjoy them as well.

AUTHOR BIO

B.B., ALSO KNOWN as Bebe, found her passion for romance when she read her first romance novel by Susan Johnson at a young age. She would sneak into her mother’s closet for books and even sometimes the attic. It soon became a hobby, and later an addiction, influencing her life in a positive way.

Bebe is fresh out of undergrad college and has always wondered about the existence of her talent. When she finally decided to pick up a metaphorical pen and start writing, she found a new way to embrace her passion.

She favors a romance that isn’t always easy on the eyes or heart, and loves to see characters grow–characters who are seemingly doomed from the start but find love anyway.

Fear Me, her debut novel, is the first of many.

Excerpt

“Tell me you’re on fucking birth control,” Tyler had said to a very naked, beautiful, and obviously vulnerable Ella. But he’d been too angry with himself and, at the time, with her to see it.

She’d managed a nod, her brown hair hanging over her bare shoulder, her hazel eyes a damp mossy green. “I am.”

Relief had flooded him. She might have crawled into his bed uninvited, but he’d known damn well what he was doing when he’d thrust inside her. She’d been so damned tight, and when he’d hit that obvious barrier, he’d realized immediately … but it was too late. His control had snapped, and he’d taken her hard and fast, nothing like what her first time should have been like — if he’d been sober. If he’d known she was a virgin. But if he hadn’t been drunk, she wouldn’t have made it into his bed in the first place.

“It’s okay.” She’d reached out and touched his bare chest, the sweet gesture a brand on his skin, and his body had woken up again, hardening for her. Which had only served to piss him off more.

“No, it isn’t okay. It was a big fucking mistake. A mess, and you better believe it won’t be happening again.”

Tears had filled her eyes as she’d gathered her clothes, pulled her long shirt on, and run, slamming his bedroom door behind her.

“Fuck.” He’d fallen back against the pillows, so furious at himself he couldn’t think straight.

Traveling to the Caribbean to rescue Ella would bring them alone together for the first time since he’d looked her in the eye and spoken with all the finesse of a drunk twenty-three-year-old.

He’d been an ass. Worse, he hadn’t stuck around the next day to apologize. He’d kissed his mother good-bye and lied, saying he’d been called back to base, all to avoid facing Ella. And in the years since, he hadn’t manned up any better. He ran a hand through his now-longer-than-regulation-length hair. If any man had treated his sisters the way he’d treated Ella, Tyler would have had their balls.

“Ty? You’ll go get her, right? What if it’s worse than a concussion and they misdiagnosed her? She needs someone there before the storm hits.”
