What do you do when the one you least expect to matter…
Ends up mattering the most?
Derek Pearson likes to think he’s an easygoing guy. Uncomplicated, upfront, and unapologetic with what he wants. His what you see is what you get attitude is on prominent display for anyone who cares to look, and his foul mouth is right there to back it up should you miss the point.
However, what you see isn’t always what you get, and only a select few have ever glimpsed the real man under the brash exterior.
Among them? Professor Jordan Devaney. Complicated, high-maintenance, and vibrant, he’s Derek’s opposite in every way. From the moment they saw each other, a love-hate relationship began.
But what happens when one person wants more?
Having read Finley, the first book in the Sunset Cove series, my introduction to Derek and Jordan had been nothing short of intriguing. My first impressions after their scene stealing moment was that, I had to know what it was that bound these two decidedly opposite men. On the surface their only commonality appeared to be that their respective best friends were romantically involved, but it soon become apparent their relationship goes further than mere acquaintances.
With a story spanning over 10 years, Ella takes us back to the very beginning. My affection for Derek was instantaneous, as a person he is jaded and guarded. What should be a exciting and eye opening experience of starting college is marred by his home life situation. Although physically strong he is a wounded character, and it’s something that is recognised by his professor, Jordan Devaney.
The unlikeliness of their pairing made for a sometimes tempestuous relationship. Jordan is a outgoing and a vivacious character, but surprising of the two, he is the one I identified with the least. It may have been his reluctance in moving forward with their relationship – for reasons that did not seem wholly reasonable that were the culprit for my feelings. Thats said, his devotion to Derek was unquestionable. When Derek called, he came. Everytime.
Devil’s Kiss is a romance that builds, and much like the anticipation it creates, it’s savoured. I’m not sure if it’s something in the water down in Sunset Cove but I’ve become to addicted to this series and I hope there is more to come in the not to distant future.
