WAYLAID by Sarina Bowen

Release Date: 20th July 2021

Series: True North, #8

Genre: Contemporary Romance

It’s a tale as old as time: the bad boy meets the good girl. He makes a daring proposition. Then the boy gets a mysterious head injury and loses a year of his life…

The first time I meet Rickie, I don’t know what to make of him. The second time we meet, he doesn’t remember the six hours we spent together. Or standing me up afterward.

I’m not the same, either. I’ve got secrets. I’ve told lies. Bad boys aren’t my type, anyway. Even the ones with troubled gray eyes.

But now we’re roommates. Cue the awkward moments in the hallway when he’s wearing only a towel and a smile. He’s determined to win me over, and his talented hands weaken my resolve.

It’s all fun and games until my past rears its ugly head and his secrets come to light, shaking our fragile connection, maybe even breaking it…

Note: this is Daphne Shipley’s story. Contents include Vermonty ice cream flavors, nerdy awkwardness, tattoos, and a playboy grandpa.

★4.5 STARS★

The sign of great book boyfriend is when you’re willing to fight other romance readers for him. Ok, in no way do I condone violence, but you see, I’ve longed for Rickie’s story from the moment we were introduced to him in Heartland. Sarina did an incredible job in setting the stage for him. He was the happy go lucky roommate that came nightfall gave off a heavy whiff of mystery and intrigue.

I don’t think there would be many that would disagree that Daphne Shipley may well be the crankiest sibling. It’s her nature to be tough on herself, and the summer before college transfer has her feeling more miserable than ever. She feels like a failure having gotten herself in a situation that could threaten her schooling and career. She’s resigned to wallow but her brother’s college roommate has other ideas.

Rickie still struggles from an injury that has left him feeling as if he doesn’t know himself, but he’s confident in his feelings for Daphne Shipley. She prickly – sure, but she makes him smile (albeit begrudgingly on her part) and brings back a levity that he’s missed.

Waylaid is an incredibly addictive read. Rickie and Daphne have some heavy real life issues to contend with but even so, the wonderful balance of flirtation, passion and titillation of love’s first bloom made certain their story became one of my favourites in the series.

The good girl and the bad boy may well be a tale as old as time, but when the bad boy is Rickie… back off he’s mine!

EXPOSED by Kristen Callihan

Series: VIP, #4

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: 13th July 2021

Brenna

There are some people in life who know exactly how to push your buttons. For me, it’s Rye Peterson. We can’t spend more than ten minutes together before we’re at each other’s throats, which makes working together that much harder. Rye is the bassist for Kill John, the biggest rock band in the world, and I am his publicist. It doesn’t help that the man is gorgeous, funny, talented, and…never takes anything seriously. Avoidance is key.

But everything changes when he overhears something he shouldn’t: a confession made in a moment of weakness. Now the man I’ve tried so hard to ignore is offering me the greatest temptation of all—him.

Rye

Brenna James is the one. The one I can’t have. The one I can’t get out of my mind. Believe me, I’ve tried; the woman loathes me. I managed well enough—until I heard her say she’s as lonely as I am. That she needed to be touched, held, satisfied. And I could no longer deny the truth: I wanted to be the one to give her what she craved.

I convinced her that it would just be sex, mutual satisfaction with nothing deeper. But the moment I have her, she becomes my world. I’ve never given her a good reason to trust me before. Now, I’ve got to show Brenna that we’re so much better together than we ever were apart.

Things are going to get messy. But getting messy with Brenna is what I do best.

OUT NOW!

★4 STARS★

Brenna James and Rye Peterson are best known by their loved ones for pushing each other’s buttons. They’ve known one another for years and their lives are intertwined in both career and personal. As well as cousin to band member Killian, Brenna is the group’s PR manager extraordinaire. On paper her life is an enviable one, but there’s a niggling itch Brenna needs help scratching.

As bassist to one of the world’s most famous rock bands Rye should feel content with life. Rather he finds himself at a crossroads. He’s known for his carefree attitude but due to the seriousness of a situation he finds himself in, he finds himself looking for distraction where he shouldn’t.

Luck is in on Rye’s side when he overhears a conversation of Brenna’s, and much to Brenna’s horror he others her a solution the feels can bring them mutual satisfaction. The thin line between love and hate is not one neither of them wish to address, but they are both in agreement at the all consuming attraction that has circled them for years.

Conflict arises when fear and old insecurities rear their head to throw their alliance in jeopardy. It was a frustrating to see them give in to what they considered weakness but it was ultimately satisfying to see them confront it. Rye and Brenna are a passionate couple and along with that element, I enjoyed the playfulness of their relationship.

The VIP series is an wonderful one. The blend of humour and emotion makes each book throughly engaging, and the stories are made to be reread. I’m not ready for the series to come to an end yet but I eagerly await for the music to start again with Whip’s book.

For the right amount of money, she can avoid waitressing and play the part of his dependable down-to-earth girlfriend. What she can’t avoid–dammit–is the growing steam between them.

And while Patrick might be a charming rogue on screen, in real life he’s a six-foot-two confusing, gorgeous, brooding grump, who keeps her at a distance . . . but also makes her feel like this bond between them might be more than just an act.

Being dumped on cue should be no big deal. Except being fake with Patrick is the realist relationship Norah has ever had. What’s a girl to do, but flip the script, and ask for a re-match made in Hollywood?

CHAPTER ONE

He slunk into the restaurant mid-afternoon wearing his usual scowl. Ignoring the closed sign, he took a booth near the back. No one else was allowed to do this. Just him. Today’s wardrobe consisted of black jeans, Converse, and a button-down shirt. Doubtless designer. And the way those sleeves hugged his biceps . . . why, they should have been ashamed of themselves. I was this close to yelling “get a room.”

Instead, I asked, “The usual?”

Slumped down in the corner of the booth, he tipped his chin in reply. For such a tall guy, he sure went out of his way to try to hide.

I said no more. Words were neither welcomed nor wanted. Which was fine since (A) I was tired and (B) he tipped well for the peace and quiet.

Out back, Vinnie the cook was busy prepping for tonight, his knife making quick work of an onion.

“He’s here,” I said.

A smile split Vinnie’s face. He was a huge fan of the man’s action films. The ones he’d made before hitting it big time and taking on more serious dramatic roles. Him choosing to visit the restaurant every month or so made Vinnie’s life complete. Especially since the restaurant, Little Italy, was the very definition of a hole in the wall. Not somewhere generally frequented by the Hollywood elite. Meanwhile, I was less of a fan, but still a fan. You know.

“Get him his beer,” Vinnie ordered.

Like I didn’t know my job. Sheesh.

He was busy with his cell by the time I placed the Peroni in front of him. No glass. He drank straight from the bottle like an animal. Just then, a woman in a red sweater dress and tan five-inch-heel booties strode in through the front door.

“I’m sorry, we’re closed,” I said.

“I’m with him.” She headed straight for his booth and slid into the other side, giving the man a dour look. “You can’t just walk out, Patrick. You’re going to have to choose one of them.”

“Nope.” He took a pull from his beer. “They all sucked.”

“There had to be at least one that would do.”

“Not even a little.”

She sighed. “Keep this up and you’ll be obsolete by next week. Beyond help. Forgotten.”

“Go away, Angie.”

“Just another talented but trash male in Hollywood. That’s what they’re saying on social media.”

“I don’t give a shit.”

“Liar,” she drawled.

I wasn’t quite sure what to do. Obviously they knew each other, but he did not seem to want her here. And she really wasn’t supposed to be here. Vinnie had okayed after-hours entry to only one person. On the other hand, if I asked her to leave, she’d probably sic her lawyers on me. She looked the type.

The woman spied me hovering. “Get me a glass of red.”

“She’s not staying,” countermanded Patrick.

Angie didn’t move an inch. “They were all viable options. Pliant. Young. Pretty. Discreet. Nothing weird or kinky in their backgrounds.”

“That might have made them more interesting.”

“Interesting women is what got you into this mess.” The woman frowned, taking me in. Still hovering. One perfectly shaped brow rose in question. “Yes? Is there a problem?”

Now it was Patrick’s turn to sigh and give me a nod. He was so dreamy with his jaw and cheekbones and his everything. Real classic Hollywood handsome. Especially with his short light brown hair in artful disarray and a hint of stubble. Sometimes it was hard not to stare. Which is probably why his personality tended to scream “leave me alone.”

I headed for the small bar area at the back of the restaurant to fetch the wine like a good little waitress.

“We shouldn’t be discussing this here,” said Angie, giving the room a disdainful sniff. Talk about judgy. I thought the raw brick walls and chunky wood tables were cool. Give or take Vinnie’s collection of old black-and-white photos of Los Angeles freeways. Who knew what that was about?

Patrick slumped down even further. “I’m not going back there. I’m done with it.”

“This isn’t safe.” Angie looked around nervously. “Let’s—”

“We’re fine. I’ve been coming here for years.”

“You just got dropped from a big-budget film, Patrick,” she said, exasperation in her tone. “The industry may not find you bankable right now, but I’m sure gossip about you is still selling just fine. This week at least.”

★3 STARS★

The first novel in Kylie’s new West Hollywood series, centres around A-lister, Patrick Walsh and his unlikely hero, waitress Norah Peers.

As the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity” but this isn’t the case for Patrick. He’s got himself involved in a scandal that may do irreparable damage to his reputation, and he is in dire need to clean up his image.

The most exciting part of Norah’s day is when the Hollywood heartthrob stops by for lunch at the restaurant. He’s polite if not particularly talkative, but she’s happy to leave him be – that is until he propositions her one day with life changing opportunity.

Fake is  a Cinderella story if ever there was one. Norah is thrust into Hollywood royalty and it was so nice to see Patrick protective of her as she grapples with her new way of life. Time whizzed by as I read this. The story is a sweet one, low on agnst and focuses on their budding friendship that blossoms into a relationship fit for the silver screen.

Series: The Company, #2

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: 1st December 2020

Secrets, desires, and exquisite pie. It’s all in a day’s work at The Company.

Growing up, I was the rough guy from the wrong neighborhood who couldn’t catch a break. Posy was the pampered girl I tried to impress. But I managed to steal only a single kiss before I had to skip town.

Now I’m back, and the tables are turned. Posy runs a struggling pie shop. I’m the VP of a secretive billion dollar security company.

Not that I can tell her.

There’s a murderer on the loose in New York, and he seems to spend a lot of time at Posy’s shop. I can’t let on that I’m here to bring him down before he can harm a hair on her pretty head.

Going undercover as Posy’s new barista wasn’t my idea. I don’t even drink coffee. But now I have to call her “boss,” and do everything the curvy perfectionist asks of me. I’d forgotten how much we infuriate each other, and that she somehow fills me with both irritation and desire in the same breath.

There’s nobody more skilled at stealth ops than me. I can bring this killer down. Right after I take a cold shower. And just as soon as I figure out how to make a skinny peppermint latte with milk poured in the shape of a kitten…

★4 STARS★

Ask for a hero who is both a lover and a fighter, and I present to you ladies and gentleman, Gunnar Scott.

Although he has a face that both charms and disarms, his true talent is that of cybersecurity extraordinaire. The latest mission he has no choice but to accept is based is in his old stomping ground of New York. He has a hate-hate relationship with the city, but when he learns his one time crush and nemesis’ cafe is unknowingly the hub of criminal activity, his only course of action is donning an apron and going undercover. Posy is every bit the go getter he remembers her being and with his endearment flooding back, it easily becomes apparent this won’t be the in and out job he hoped for.

Running her own business is a humongous achievement and sense of pride for Posy, but of late everything and anything seems to be going wrong. She’s in desperate need of a barista, and as if the universe were playing her trick on her, her prayers are answered by her one time one time crush and nemesis, Gunnar.

For all intents and purposes their relationship should be a strictly professional one, but such is their chemistry that percolates it’s impossible to put their feelings for one another on the back burner. She puts up a valiant effort to resist his charm but he’s so incredibly caring and supportive, he quickly becomes the person she can most relay on.

Loverboy is a robust read packed full of crime cappers, with a healthy shot of feel-good endorphins. If you’re in the mood for a serving of 007 meets coffee heaven, pull up and pew and see what this Loverboy can do.

★NEW RELEASE & REVIEW★ TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN BY TALIA HIBBERT

Genres: Contemporary Romance

Buy Links: Amazon US | Amazon UK | iBooks | Kobo | B&N | Google Play |

TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN by Talia Hibbert

Release Date: 23rd June 2020

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Talia Hibbert returns with another charming romantic comedy about a young woman who agrees to fake date her friend after a video of him “rescuing” her from their office building goes viral…

Danika Brown knows what she wants: professional success, academic renown, and an occasional roll in the hay to relieve all that career-driven tension. But romance? Been there, done that, burned the T-shirt. Romantic partners, whatever their gender, are a distraction at best and a drain at worst. So Dani asks the universe for the perfect friend-with-benefits—someone who knows the score and knows their way around the bedroom.

When brooding security guard Zafir Ansari rescues Dani from a workplace fire drill gone wrong, it’s an obvious sign: PhD student Dani and ex-rugby player Zaf are destined to sleep together. But before she can explain that fact, a video of the heroic rescue goes viral. Now half the internet is shipping #DrRugbae—and Zaf is begging Dani to play along. Turns out, his sports charity for kids could really use the publicity. Lying to help children? Who on earth would refuse?

Dani’s plan is simple: fake a relationship in public, seduce Zaf behind the scenes. The trouble is, grumpy Zaf’s secretly a hopeless romantic—and he’s determined to corrupt Dani’s stone-cold realism. Before long, he’s tackling her fears into the dirt. But the former sports star has issues of his own, and the walls around his heart are as thick as his… um, thighs.

Suddenly, the easy lay Dani dreamed of is more complex than her thesis. Has her wish backfired? Is her focus being tested? Or is the universe just waiting for her to take a hint?

★4 STARS

Let’s hear it for inclusive reads that celebrate individuality with style, humour and aplomb!

Take a Hint, Dani Brown is the sophomore novel in The Brown Sister’s series, and in keeping with the family tradition, Dani is a unapologetic whirlwind of sass and intelligence. Unlike the adage “All work and no play..”

Dani’s PhD does not stop her from satisfying her penchant for exactly that. She has no desire to enter a relationship, but seeks the help of intervention in deciding upon who her next friend with benefits should be.

Zafir Ansari has admired Dani from afar, he appreciates a great woman when he sees one and his interactions with her are the highlight of his day. He daren’t dream of ever being able land a woman like Dani but the power of social media and #DrRugbae has other plans for them.

Zaf has a history of his own and his journey to now security guard is paved with grief and some regret. He battles anxiety but even with his struggles he seeks a position of betterment for himself and others like him. He is a wonderful man and for all his grumpiness incredibly sweet.

Dani and Zaf’s friendship was awash with hilarious banter but also genuine care for one another. The move into a physical relationship seemed like a seamless one and I cheered from the stands as their thoughts belied just how deeply their affections ran. They were hugely supportive of one another and I enjoyed witnessing the unfolding of their relationship.

We are two for two with the Brown Sisters and I am not so patiently waiting for Talia to bring on the first lady, Eve!

He’s on the rebound. He’s also the sexiest thing on two legs, and for some crazy reason it’s Bess that he wants.

★4/4.5 STARS★

Bess Beringer is a leading sports agent in her field. She’s worked hard for years and in doing so admits she’s put her personal and love life on the back burner. There’s nothing like a thirtieth birthday to make you reevaluate and Bess is determined to make time for love.

Mark “Tank” Tankiewicz is a blast from Bess’ past. They had a brief and passionate affair when Bess was a newbie on the scene, but their careers took them on different trajectories. While Bess’ work life is on the up, Tank’s seems to be well… tanking. Starting anew in a new city and a new team, Bess is a sight for sore eyes. He would love to pick up where they left of but is met with resistance from Bess.

Whilst Tank is temptation on a stick Bess owes it to herself to find a lasting and committed relationship. She isn’t the same person from all those years ago, but the problem she finds is neither is Tank. He was charming in his young but in his adulthood he’s damn right dangerous.

I’ve followed the Bruisers since their first outing and with every book in the series my affection  and adoration for them grows. There is a wonderful sense of family and even as a reader I too feel as if I am enveloped in it. Each story is angsty, endearing and impossible to put down. As expected, Sarina shots and scores with this winning read!

★3.5 STARS★

The former class clown becomes the teacher in Sara Ney’s latest instalment in The Douchebag series. If you remember well, Rex Gunderson was the team manager to our favourite bunch of wrestlers, that was until he got himself fired by making a silly bet involving the coach’s daughter.

Rex is back on campus and finds himself on the popular student body dating app. He matches with Hannah, roommate to Skylar from The Lying Hours. Although they quickly write of any chance of romance between themselves, Rex enthusiastically takes on the role of her dating coach. Hannah’s style is hapless as it is tactless, but Rex is adamant he can help her bag a man.

They develop an easy rapport and persistently tease one another. It’s not long before their thoughts are on one another rather than readying Hannah to enter the dating world. Their blossoming romance was a cute one, and I enjoyed innocent quality to it.

Rex had always comes across as immature and irritating so it was a very nice surprise to meet the new improved version. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still Rex, but this time there is an endearing quality to him that was missing before.

MASTER OF SALT & BONES by Keri Lake

Genre: Romantic Suspense

Release Date: 22nd April 2020

When I was a little girl, I dreamed a handsome knight would come and rescue me from my wretched mother. He’d ride up on his white steed and break the curse I’ve been fated to carry since the day I was born.

Funny how things changed over time. How the fairy tale twisted into something far more crooked, darker than I ever imagined.

In reality, my knight is scarred and broken, living alone in a castle of bones that overlooks the sea. He isn’t searching for me. He never was.

Lucian Blackthorne is as cursed as I am, and equally shunned by the locals, the fishers of men, who believe him to be the devil in the flesh.

Perhaps he is, with the way his amber eyes draw me in, ignite me like an infernal blaze. And the sins he whispers in my ear are as wickedly intoxicating as the man himself.

Yet, his touch is heaven and his will is my weakness.

He calls us forbidden, an unsalvageable tragedy, with no happy end. Maybe we are. But in this story, he’s the one who needs saving.

★4.5 STARS★

Master of Salt & Bones is a story driven by mystery and suspicion, set in a world where it’s occupants are as calculating as they are devious.

The Devil of Bonesalt, Lucian Blackthorne has a reputation that terrifies many a grown adult. Rarely seen but widely gossiped about, Isadora Quinn is as fascinated by her new employer as she is terrified. Although worlds apart, Isadora can identify to the feeling of being on the outside looking in. She too has secrets, and as scary as he may first appear, she soon sees the man beneath the mask.

Gothic in its telling, Master of Salt & Bones is a love story that cultivates in the dark. Lucian is plagued by ghosts of the past, but it’s the future he wants with Isadora that force him to excise them.

A masterfully woven tale of suspense and intrigue, Lake’s character & story building is as immense as the world she creates.

Ten years later, her old enemy sends a text.

Delilah’s sister has stolen a valuable heirloom from Macon, now a rising Hollywood star, and he intends to collect his due. One problem: Sam has skipped town.

Sparks still sizzle between Macon and Delilah, only this heat feels alarmingly like unwanted attraction. But Delilah is desperate to keep her weak-hearted mother from learning of her sister’s theft. So she proposes a deal: she’ll pay off the debt by being Macon’s personal chef and assistant.

It’s a recipe for disaster, but Macon can’t stop himself from accepting. Even though Delilah clearly hates him, there’s something about her that feels like home. Besides, they’re no longer kids, and what once was a bitter rivalry has the potential to be something sweeter. Something like forever.

★3 STARS★

As a fan of Kristen’s books I had high expectations going in.  Enemies to lovers is a trope I love, but in order to enjoy it, I feel both protagonists need to be on level footing in some way. In this case I was slightly uncomfortable with the feud in their youth because I felt Delilah’s animosity was born from self preservation more than anything else.

In adulthood Delilah is a very successful chef and Macon an actor. They have not seen or heard from each other in Ten years but their worlds collide due to Delilah’s sister, Sam. Sam’s character was one I thought would be redeemable with the possibility or her having her own book, but like other plots running through the novel I felt she/it became a villain/device rather than being cohesive in the story building.

This was likely a case of “It’s not you, it’s me”  as I was interested enough in wanting to see Delilah and Macron’s HEA, but I can’t say I was reverted in way that I normally am with Kristen’s novels.

HEARTLAND by Sarina Bowen

Series: True North, #7

Release Date: 28th January 2020

An emotional friends to lovers romance full of risky secrets and late-night lessons in seduction.

Dylan is my best friend, and the only person in my life who understands me. He doesn’t mind my social awkwardness or my weird history. The only glitch? He doesn’t know that I’ve been hopelessly, desperately in love with him since the first day we picked apples together in his family’s orchard.

But I know better than to confess.

Now that we’re both in college together, I’m seeing a new side of him. College Dylan drinks and has a lot of sex. None of it with me. Until the night I foolishly ask him to tutor me in more than algebra…and he actually says yes.

But the cool morning light shows me how badly I’ve endangered our friendship. And I don’t know if anything will be the same again.

★4 STARS★

If it wasn’t for the fact I fancy half of them, I’d well and truly feel like one of the family now that we are seven books into the True North series. They are so well thought out and ingenious, I truly feel Sarina has material for this series to run and run should she so wish.

For those that follow the series, didn’t Dylan Shipley grow up well! I’ve always known him as younger brother to my favourite grumpy farmer, Griff, but now Dylan holds his own in the attention grabbing department.

On the surface he’s laid back and loving life, but underneath he holds onto a guilt that may explain why his relationships have always been temporary and superficial. Bar his family his relationship with Chastity is the one that brings him the most fulfilment, and when he realises her feelings for him are more than friendly, they put it at risk as they embark on a physical affair.

Chasity is a character I was intrigued and impressed by. She was brave enough to escape a cult she had known all her life, and her fear of the unknown took a backseat to her thirst for learning and immersing herself in her new world. Dylan is her friend first and foremost, but as their relationship takes on a new form Dylan discovers through Chasity how meaningful a lasting relationship can be.

There isn’t a book I’ve read by Sarina that didn’t show me what love is and Heartland is no exception to that.
