I think it’s fair to say I had a slight cause for concern when going into Juniper Unraveling. I’ve never had any interest in reading a dystopian novel before, but such is the power of Keri Lake, I couldn’t have trusted a better author to take the leap with. The fact that it also hinted to harbouring one of her darkest heroes yet may have also given me reason to clear my throat with nervousness.
I’m the first to admit I’m a wimp when it comes to reads such as these. But if you were to ask me if my fears and hesitation warranted I would say, absolutely so. It’s been days since I finished Juniper Unraveling and I’m still reeling. Keri’s immense talent and creativity make for such a visceral reading experience it’s impossible to not be drawn into the world she’s created. To put it simply, she blew me away.
Set in a desperate time when human life is exploited and its sacredness disabused, Juniper Unraveling is story that needs to be experienced and not told. So vital is the plot there is not much I can without taking away the enjoyment of its unraveling. My emotions were at war with themselves and I was flitted between being unequivocally terrified to basking in unmitigated message of hope.
As is usual of Lake, the integrity of her characters was paramount to my enjoyment of the story. Wren and Six were courageous and their tenacity was admiral. In all my anxiety and it’s their romance that grounded me.
Writers like Keri Lake are very important to a reader such as myself. She takes me out of my comfort zone and pushes my boundaries in terms of new experiences. She’s imaginative and fearless and that is reflected in writing and body of work. My wits may be frayed but her status as one of my favourite authors is here to stay.
