Andrea Anderson has no clue of the thoughts churning around in the dark and dangerous ex-con’s head as he enters her classroom. In fact, she’s momentarily lost for words. Not in her entire teaching career has she had a student who looked quite like Stu Cross.A widow at just twenty-eight, love is something Andie hasn’t considered a part of her life for a very long time. However, when lingering touches turn to whispered words and hot, searching stares, she begins to wonder if maybe she should take a leap of faith. But Stu is in her class for a reason, and it has nothing to do with love. He’s there to burrow his way into her life and repay a debt, otherwise his family will suffer. Andie is the first person to show him true kindness since he left prison, and though he doesn’t want to mislead her, he doesn’t have another choice.

Before long, Stu can’t tell whether or not he’s acting anymore, and his feelings for Andie could throw all of his carefully crafted plans into complete and utter disarray.

Review

★4.5 of 5 stars★

Thief of Hearts may be the fifth book in the Hearts series, but L.H. Cosway is no way done proving how much more of a story she has to give us. By the same token it’s so refreshing as a reader of the series to realise I’m by nowhere near reaching my capacity of love for the Cross Brothers.

This time around for the Cosway treatment is Stu Cross. I didn’t once envisage Stu having his own book, because being completely honest, he seemed to be quite an unfavourable character. His only shining moment came in Hearts of Blue when he took rap for his younger brother Lee, which resulted in a two year prison sentence for himself.

As part of the conditions of his release, he commences an adult education course taught by our heroine, Andrea Anderson. Since her husband’s death years prior, Andrea has lived a quiet-repetitive life. Stu’s arrival in her classroom is an awakening she can’t quite understand, and an injection of colour on a once bland canvas.

Stu was so much more than I expected him to be. He was the epitome of a cheeky chap (he’s a Cross after all) but he also harboured a strong sense of family I never felt him possible of. His attraction to Andrea resulted to many humorous moments in the classroom, but it was the serious side to Stu that really got my heart thumping.

Cosway excels at writing a vivid story full of likeable, colourful characters. Although their life experiences may not be similar, it’s impossible not to to find relatability in their emotions – which she describes so well. The forbidden element ratchet up the sexually tension, but it was the vulnerability in them both which really stole my heart.
